During FY 2017–18, Samvad Samajik Sansthan implemented the SMS 2.0 Pilot on Recycling & Plastic Waste Management across five Gram Panchayats, eight villages and five schools in Lucknow and Barabanki districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Grounded in a baseline survey of 1,713 households, the project developed a community-based solid waste management model focused on recycling, plastic waste reduction, sanitation and community participation.

Project Objectives

Built around community participation
The project worked through Enviro Clubs, schools, Gram Panchayats, School Management Committees, government departments, shopkeepers and community members to build local ownership of waste management and environmental practices.
Outcomes
The project established a community-led solid waste management model encouraging segregation, recycling and responsible plastic waste management.
Positive behaviour change, improved sanitation practices, stronger environmental awareness, community participation, and a replicable Zero Waste model were achieved.
Zero Waste Village Model
In Narendi Gram Panchayat, door-to-door waste collection and wet/dry waste segregation demonstrated the Zero Waste and Recycling concept at community level.
